"Agile Teams: Surprising Exceptions to Common Expectations"Facilitated by Gil Broza (@gilbroza, http://www.3PVantage.com/) and David Spann (http://www.aamngt.com/) Purpose: We believe there are stories that are counter to the standard theory for successful Agile teams. In other words, we believe there are teams that have failed despite all their best efforts to be Agile and conversely, we believe there are teams who have succeeded even when critical success factors are in place. We want to disclose these stories...

Last week I attended the Agile 2010 conference in Orlando. Agile 20xx is the major US agile-oriented conference whose roots go back to XP Universe and the Agile Development Conference. I've not been a regular attender of the main agile conferences, but I did go last year as well. Rather than make an attempt at a consolidated description, here are a few scattered impressions. Elizabeth Hendrickson (aka testobsessed) Attendance was 1400, more than 2009, but around the same as 2008. So although...

Saturday, 14 August 2010 Agile 2010 part 4: Effective coaching and how to grow as a coachTopic: General I spent quite a bit of my time during the week in this area. I attended four sessions that directly or indirectly addressed the topic, and participated in two informal group discussions about how to improve the state of the art of coaching in the agile space. The coaching-related sessions I attended were very different from one another, and all...

Saturday, 14 August 2010 Agile 2010 part 5: Writing code, refactoring, and debugging legacy codeTopic: General For fun and relaxation, I attended a few sessions devoted to hands-on programming...or at least sessions that sounded as if they would involve hands-on programming. Pairing games as intentional practice (Moss Collum and Laura Dean) I expected the session to be about games designed to bring out good and bad practices in pairing, and I expected...

Agile2010 part 6: Bloody Stupid JohnsonTopic: General One of the highlights of the conference was the session presented by Arlo Belshee and James Shore, "Bloody Stupid Johnson Teaches Agile." The presenters acted out a play they had written that poked fun at every agile stereotype you've probably heard of. By popular demand they repeated it later in the week. It was recorded and I hope to see it appear online soon. Using a variety of hats and props, Arlo and James played the roles of several stereotyped characters...

Saturday, 14 August 2010 Agile 2010 part 2: Perspectives about current state and future direction of agile Needless to say, every session and every conversation throughout the week added to my understanding of how people perceive agile these days, and where they think we should be going. There were quite a few informal discussions of the topic every day. For me, the following contributed strongly to this area of learning: Alistair Cockburn's Oath...

Some thoughts from day 1 of Agile2010 I started the day with Mary Poppendieck's which was based on the following book: Switch: How to Change things when change is hard. The talk was split into 3 parts. First you need to Motivate the Elephant, then you need to Direct the Rider, and finally you need to Shape the Path. Mary suggested that in order to Motivate people, you need to treat them like volunteers. You need to treat them like they could leave at any time. A quote from Peter Drucker: "They need, aoe...

Frequently Asked Questions How do I nominate someone? Send an email to pask-nominations AT agilealliance DOT org. Please explain the reasons why you think the person you nominate should be considered. Who chooses the winners? The award committee is composed of all previous winners. We discuss nominations as they come in, then meet at the Agile conference to select a pair of winners. Not all past winners are necessarily present at that meeting; only those present have a say in picking winners. How do you choose...

Original Posting: March 4, 2008 Hi, As many of you know, next week is a HUGE conference in Orlando, Florida.
